There has been a significant increase in hostile xenophobia, government censorship, and police brutality in Germany and the European Union, resulting in migrants losing their sense of identity and security, which has consequently compromised their creativity. We are afraid, as many of us are. We feel an urgent need to respond and counter this situation. We want to provide a platform through our collective work, for the marginalised and forgotten stories, bodies, identities and cultures to be seen and heard in public spaces.  Alternatives Denkmal für Deutschland, ADfD is a proposal that traces, embraces exile memories, and creates a new monument through Augmented Reality. A monument that’s not only an art work, but a space holder where urban space and digital space intersect, the oppressed voices speak up for their own realities and dreams. We keep asking ourselves, in what ways can migration memories be shared and preserved? How can a collective approach contribute to expanding the culture of remembrance in public spaces? What could a monument commemorating migration experiences look like? What role can emerging digital formats play? The community-based process is anchored in a week-long workshop with eleven selected participants as well as a curated series of performative lectures that are open to the public.
